If it's broken, I fix it.

If it's missing, I find it.

If it's complicated, I translate it.

Hi. I’m Matthew.

I'm the guy you call when mission meets operational challenge. After more than a decade working inside nonprofits—from local community work to national movement-building—I've become a happy tinkerer of systems, happiest when organizations are aligned to succeed.

That's why I founded MLS Consulting: to provide nonprofit leaders with the specialized expertise they need to build stronger, more effective organizations so they can actually focus on their impact.

What drives my work:

Wellbeing as strategy. I'm relentlessly curious about how we can harness our natural drives for wellbeing to make our work more impactful and sustainable. I draw deeply on my experience with the Full Frame Initiative's wellbeing design principles to understand behavior and drive change from the individual to the systemic level.

Listening for what wants to emerge. As an active member of the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers), I practice a deeper kind of listening. I expect inspiration to come from unlikely places and make room for the unexpected to upend even the most carefully laid plans.

Joy as a non-negotiable. You can't force joy, but if you're not having at least a little fun along the way, something's wrong. Many nonprofits address serious injustices, but bringing levity to the work and giving our nervous systems the gift of laughter is critical to sustainable success.
